Wolesi Jirga failed to elect full admin board

KABUL: The national parliament of Afghanistan started 16th legal round of the eighth working year on last Wednesday. The Mesharano Jirga, upper house of the parliament, elected its administrative board on the same day. Election for the administrative board of the Wolesi Jirga, lower house of the parliament, was held today. However, the house could not elect its full administrative board.

Abdul Rahim, Humayun Humayun and Nazir Ahmadzai were contested for the position of first deputy chairman of Wolesi Jirga. Syed Ali Kazmi and Ghulam Farooq Majrooh were contesting for the second deputy chairman. Similarly, Abdul Rauf Inami and Abdul Qadi were running for the slot of secretary while Irfanullah Irfan and Samin Barakzai were competing for deputy secretary.

Samin Barakzai withdrew her nomination. In this way, Irfanullah Irfan was elected as deputy secretary in the open voting. None of the remaining candidates could obtain 50+1 votes. The election entered into the second round, which would be held tomorrow. In the Wolesi Jirga, 121 lawmakers were present today. The 50+1 votes were equal to 111. None of the candidates could secure the required number of votes. It is pertinent to mention here that the chairmen of both the houses of the parliament are elected for an entire period. However, the remaining administrative board is elected at the start of every year.
