Women’s role crucial in peace talks

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: Chinese envoy in Afghanistan attended a seminar at the President Palace titled “The Role of Afghan Women in the Peace Process, where Frist Lady of Afghanistan Rula Ghani delivered speech, stressing over women’s role in the peace talks.

Among the 70-odd attendees were Afghan female high officials and diplomats from foreign countries. Rula Ghani said the seminar was an opportunity to inform the international community about the result of the Afghan Women National Consensus for Peace Conference.

In his return, Chinese Ambassador Liu Jinsong has praised the Rula Ghani and other Afghan females’ efforts in promoting peace and voiced China’s support for the “Afghan-owned, Afghan-owned” reconciliation process that advocates peaceful means. He also highlighted China’s emphasis on providing assistance for the Afghan women.

This comes as Afghan women are very concern over their future as they still cast doubt over Taliban’s intention toward them. Taliban barred women and girls from going to schools and workplaces, and also did not spare any sorts of discrimination against them.

Now when peace talks between Afghan delegation and Taliban are due to start on 19 April, Afghan women says there must be red lines during talks. Freedom of expression, women’s right, end to discrimination, equality in society, and so many other things are red lines.
