PESHAWAR: Work on constructing shamshan ghats (cremation place) in all parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been initiated.
Ravi Kumar, adviser to the chief minister, said that due to lack of any shamshan ghat in DI Khan, the Hindu community could not perform the last rituals of their dead and are forced to bury them instead of cremation, reported private news channel.
He added: “The well off people take their dead to Terak area near Kohat for cremation, but the poor people cannot afford it.”
“The chief minister approved Rs100 million funds from the annual development programme for shamshan ghats. Shamshan ghats will be set up in DI Khan, Bannu, Hangu, Nowshera and Peshawar under the given budget,” he said.
Ravi Kumar said there are more than 50,000 Sikhs and Hindus in Peshawar and they are facing difficulties in cremation of their dead. “Keeping in view the difficulties of Hindu and Sikh community, we have decided to establish shamshan ghats in Peshawar and DI Khan on priority basis,” he said.
