KANDAHAR: The foundation stone of a girls hostel for the university in southern Kandahar province was laid by government officials, saying the six-storey structure would take up to 14 months to complete.

Acting Kandahar governor Abdul Hanan Munib, deputy higher education minister Abdul Tawab Bala Karzai, Kandahar University chancellor Dr. Hazrat Mir Totakhel and other officials attended the inauguration ceremony.

Munib said the girls hostel was being constructed on special directives of the president. He said the six-storey building on a 9000 square meters land would cost 152 million afghanis.

He said there would be 20 rooms in each storey, which would be enough to accommodate 4,000 students.

Speaking on the occasion, Bala Karzai said the hostel would offer accommodation to students from other provinces. He said the structure would have all needed facilities.

Another hostel for girls, with the same capacity and cost, will also be constructed for the Kandahar University, officials said. (Pajhwok)
