Zalmay Khalilzad calls on Army Chief at General Headquarters

RAWALPINDI: US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Friday, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

ISPR said in a statement that Zalmay Khalilzad visited General Headquarters (GHQ) and held an important meeting with the Army Chief.

Both high-ups exchanged views on matters relating to regional security and ongoing Afghanistan reconciliation process.

The US envoy acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace across the region.

Khalilzad also held a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi earlier to brief him about progress in the Afghan peace process.

Khalilzad also informed Pakistan’s foreign minister about recent meetings in Afghanistan and progress made in Doha peace talks.

Qureshi said Pakistan wishes well for the peace and stability in Afghanistan, which will directly benefit the country’s own vision for economic and human development.

The foreign minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the Afghan peace process. He said that intra-Afghan dialogue is a vital component of the reconciliation process in the country.

Earlier in the day, the US envoy along with a delegation paid a visit the Foreign Office upon his arrival in Islamabad. Khalilzad held delegation-level talks with Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua at the FO.
