JALALABAD: Afghan officials claimed security forces cleared 52 villages of Daesh fighters in the Khugyani district of eastern Nangarhar province.

Afghan combined force killed 36 Daesh fighters including key members and wounded 42 more during the Selab-4 and 9 Operations launched the Khugyani district 11 days ago, said a press release issued by Nangahar governor’s media office Wednesday.

It said the security forces recaptured 52 villages from Daesh fighters, adding the operation was underway.

The statement said five security men were also martyred and 11 more wounded while conducting operation against Daesh fighters in the Khugyani district.

Meanwhile, spokesman of Nangarhar governor, Attaullah Khugyani, said Daesh judges among five fighters were killed and seven more wounded in the Khugyani district over the past 24 hours.

He identified the alleged Daesh judge as Bashir a.k.a Sharaft. Taliban sources told media persons that the deceased was low ranking Daesh judge named Abdul Bashir a.k.a Qari Ashraf. There was no word by Daesh in this regard.

The Daesh or Islamic State Khorasan fighters attacked the Khugyani district via the Wazir Tangi in Spin Ghar Mountain few months ago. Some heavy clashes took place between Taliban and the Daesh fighters in the area, forcing thousands of people to move to safer places.

Several Taliban low ranking commanders, group leaders and fighters surrendered to Afghan forces after the clashes.
