KUNDUZ: Taliban gunmen killed two Afghan security men and wounded another in an ambush in the Darqad district of Takhar province, police said Thursday.
The operation launched on the other side of the Kokcha River successfully underway enabling the security forces to reach the centre of Darqad district Thursday morning, said Abdul Khalil Aseer, spokesman of Takhar police.
He said Taliban ambushed security forces in Alamjar area while on way to Darqad district, killing an ANA soldier and a border policeman and wounding another.
He said the operation would be extended to all the areas of the troubled district.
Local residents, however, said the security forces were facing stiff resistance and suffered huge casualties.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed five government troops were killed in Darqad district but had no reports of clash.
In Yangi Kala district of the same province, he said 12 Afghan troops were killed.
A press release issued by Afghan defense ministry said seven gunmen were killed and six more wounded during operations in Darqad and Yangi Kala districts over the past 24 hours.
