Babar Azam’s ton goes in vain as Zimbabwe wins third game

F.P. Report

RAWAPINDI: Pakistan’s ODI skipper Babar Azam’s brilliant knock of 125 runs off as many balls went in vain as Zimbabwe defeat Pakistan in Super Over on Tuesday in Rawalpindi.

Chasing a competitive target of 279 runs, Pakistan struggled to reach the total but thanks to Babar Azam’s brilliant inning that helped Pakistan equal Zimbabwe’s score of 278 runs with last pair standing at the end of 50th over.

But in the Super Over, Pakistan’s top order again failed on the same day as the team set a three-run target after losing Iftikhar Ahmed and Fakhar Zaman for two on the board. Zimbabwe easily managed to win the dead rubber game without any hiccups in Super Over.

Earlier, an unbeaten 118 runs by Sean Williams and 56 runs by Brendon Taylor helped Zimbabwe post 278-6. Young pacer Mohammad Hasnain picked three wickets for 26 runs.

Pakistan was reduced to 88-5 at one stage before Babar Azam and Khushdil Shah (33 runs) took the score to 151-6 in 31 overs.

Then Wahab Riaz came to Babar’s assistance as the duo took the score to 251 in 47th over. Babar Azam also lost his wicket at the end of 49th over. Pakistan needed 13 runs to win but the last pair managed to score 12 runs to secure a tie. Blessing Muzarabani bowled lethally and captured five wickets for 49 runs.

Prior to the third and last game of the series, Pakistan have won both of the previous two games.
