KABUL: The Chief Executive Officer of National Unity Government of Afghanistan Dr. Abdullah Abdullah left for Geneva Sunday to attend 37th session of United Nations’ Human Rights Council.
Besides attending the Human Rights Council annual session, the chief executive would also attend conference on implementation of UN conventions banning anti-personnel mines, said a press release issued by the office of chief executive.
It said Abdullah’s meeting in the Geneva session was important because Afghanistan has received become member of the UN Human Rights Commission.
The chief executive would also meet UN secretary general, head of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Swiss and Norwegian foreign ministers, Austrian governor general and leaders of several other countries.
According to the statement, Dr. Abdullah would also speak on Afghanistan’s security situation and its effects on international peace and security.
International organizations monitoring Afghanistan situation have expressed concern over violation of human rights and civilian casualties in landmine explosions. Taliban are mostly held responsible for using landmines in Afghanistan.
