COAS reaffirms commitment for regional stability, peace

RAWALPINDI:  The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has given confirmation regarding the meeting of US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation met with Chief of Army Staff. The visiting dignitary acknowledged Pakistan’s ongoing efforts for enduring peace in Afghanistan and the region.

According to the official press release of ISPR, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa and US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad endorsed their commitment towards the common goal of peace, stability in the region and agreed on continued engagement at multiple levels.

During the meeting, COAS and US envoy held profound discussions on matters of mutual interest that includes overall regional security situation with particular reference to ongoing Afghan reconciliation process during the meeting.

In addition to this, U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad will also departed for travel to South and Central Asia as well as the Middle East on January 3.

According to the press release of U.S State Department, in Doha he will meet with the two Afghan teams, encourage them, and offer U.S. support to accelerate the peace process an immediate, significant reduction in violence and ceasefire and an agreement on a political roadmap and power-sharing as soon as possible.

In the region, Ambassador Khalilzad will encourage Afghanistan’s neighbors to support an end to the violence and a political settlement as soon as possible. In Kabul, Ambassador Khalilzad will meet with Afghan leaders and convey U.S. support for the Afghan people and security forces, the statement cited.

Ambassador Khalilzad will also continue to encourage projects and plans for expanded regional connectivity, trade, and development which will be aided by an Afghan peace agreement and will help sustain peace.
