Daesh claims responsibility for Kabul suicide bombing

KABUL: The Islamic State or Daesh claimed responsibility for the suicide attack targeting a ceremony marking the death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari, slain leader of Hezb-e-Wahdat, in Kabul.

According to interior ministry, 27 people suffered casualties in the bombing. However, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said 30 persons were killed and injured in the attack.

In a press release issued on social media, the Khurasan chapter of Islamic State said an attacker Usman al-Khurasani conducted the attack on Shiite followers at a ceremony marking the death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari in Dasht-e-Burchi area of Kabul. According to Daesh, 200 people were killed and dozens more wounded in the attack.

Meanwhile, deputy spokesman for interior ministry, Nusrat Rahimi told AIP that nine people, including a cop were killed and 18 more persons including three police personnel were injured in the bombing. According to Rahimi, the Haqqani network conducted the attack.

In the meantime, the UNAMA condemned the bombing and said 10 people, including a child were killed and about 20 more sustained injuries in the attack.

However, eyewitnesses said 40 people were killed and injured in the bombing. A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a ceremony in the sixth security zone of Kabul city at around 11:30 am.

The participants were marking the death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari, slain leader of Hezb-e-Wahdat. President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani and former president Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing.
