Earthquake of magnitude 4.9 shakes northern Afghanistan

KABUL (Khaama Press): The provincial capital of Balkh province in northern Afghanistan, Mazar-e-Sharif, was jolted by an earthquake that had a moderately strong Richter magnitude of 4.9, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
According to the USGS, the US scientific agency that provides information on natural hazards, the earthquake shook Mazar-e-Sharif at around noon on Tuesday.
The 4.9-magnitude earthquake, which had a depth of 66 kilometers, was so strong that it also jolted Termez city in Uzbekistan and Aybak city, the provincial capital of Samangan province in northern Afghanistan.
There are no additional details available regarding the number of fatalities or financial losses that the earthquake in the Balkh province may have triggered.
The earthquake in Balkh came after another powerful quake in the Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan. A 112-kilometer-deep earthquake struck Faizabad, the provincial capital of Badakhshan province, on Tuesday morning.
According to the Taliban-controlled Bakhtar state news agency, there is currently no information on the potential financial impact and human casualties that the Badakhshan province earthquake may have incurred.
This year, Afghanistan has been the scene of multiple natural disasters, including violent flash floods that swept away entire villages, earthquakes that killed and injured thousands of people, torrential rainstorms that caused house roofs to collapse, and summer snowfall that destroyed agricultural crops.
