KABUL/KUNDUZ: Five persons were released from a Taliban prison during operation of Afghan Special Forces in Chardara district in Kunduz province.
The released persons were shifted to a base of Afghan forces for proper identification, spokesman for defence ministry Javed Ghafoor Ahmad told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).
Four suspected Taliban gunmen and some weapons were eliminated during the offensive.
Meanwhile, media office for Afghan National Army (ANA) Pameer 20th regiment in northeast Ghulam Hazrat Karimi confirmed the operation, saying the commando forces conducted the offensive in Kharoto village in Chardara district.
The commando forces broke the Taliban prison and released from persons. Their identity has not been ascertained so far. They were taken to ANA base. Four suspects were also arrested.
Some security guards of the prison were also killed in the gunfight, he said. However, the accurate number of the fallen gunmen was not known at the moment, he added.
Local officials also confirmed that operation was carried out in the area. They, however, were short of accurate information. Taliban have not said anything in this regard so far. (AIP)
