France Orders Unmanned Submarine Demonstrator from Naval Group

FRANCE: France’s Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) has awarded Naval Group a contract to construct an unmanned underwater combat vehicle demonstrator. The prototype, developed by Naval Group, will explore energy autonomy, sensor integration, and autonomous operation.

The drone, over 10 meters in length and weighing more than 10 metric tons, will be armed and undergo 24 months of development. It aims to assess new naval capabilities for responding to emerging conflicts and asymmetric combat scenarios.

Adm. Nicolas Vaujour highlights the importance of underwater drones in coastal defense and submarine detection, echoing global naval trends. The initiative aligns with France’s €5 billion budget for drone development, reflecting its commitment to defense modernization.

Naval Group’s expertise positions France at the forefront of underwater warfare innovation, addressing evolving seabed threats. The unmanned submarine demonstrator represents a significant milestone in naval defense technology.
