Ghani and Pence discuss issues including Afghan elections

KABUL (TOLONews): Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Mike Pence, the Vice President of the United States, on Friday evening discussed several issues on the phone regarding Afghanistan including the upcoming elections, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

In a phone conversation Pence said that the United States is ready to help Afghanistan in different areas especially in the upcoming elections.

The Independent Election commission (IEC) has scheduled parliamentary and district council elections for October 20.

The statement said that both sides also discussed the need to support the Afghan air force and to provide assistance to government forces, to review the new US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia, to review the security situation, combat terrorist threats and expand cooperation in diverse sectors.

According to the statement Pence said in a telephone call that the government and the people of the United States will remain with the people of Afghanistan to achieve lasting peace and stability.
