KABUL: The Independent Civil Aviation Authority of Afghanistan on Wednesday signed a project worth AFs 9.7 billion (around $129 million) with a French company to install an “independent” radar system for military and civilian aircraft.
Mahmoud Shah Habibi, head of the authority, said the project will be complete within the next two years and besides Afghanistan’s control of its own airspace, the new system will ensure the country’s full integrity on this.
He said that under the new project, radars with an air-defending system would be installed. The contract was signed with a French company, Thales, at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday.
Last year in August, the Independent Civil Aviation Authority of Afghanistan announced that it had assumed full control of Afghanistan’s airspace after almost 26 years. Afghanistan’s airspace has been controlled by foreigners since 1992.
