Kandahar governor not sacked: Ghani spokesman

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The Afghan government rejected reports regarding the alleged dismissal of Zalmai Weesa as provincial governor of southern Kandahar province. A presidential spokesman Dawa Khan Meenapal has said reports regarding the dismissal of Zalmai Weesa are incorrect.

This comes reports emerged earlier suggesting that the Kandahar governor and intelligence chief have been sacked after they failed to intervene and prevent a gathering of the political figures in this province. A gathering of key political figures was due to take place in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan today.

The provincial governor of Balkh and chief executive of Jamiat-e-Islami Ata Mohammad Noor was also supposed to participate in the gathering. However, his flight to southern Kandahar province did not take place due to certain issues. Noor in an online video message harshly criticized the government for aborting their flight to southern Kandahar province.

Calling the move by the government as illegal and immoral, Noor warned that such steps will have an intense negative impact on the unity of the Afghan people.

According to Noor, a delegation led by him including Batur Dostum and other figures were due to visit Kandahar to participate in a gathering but their flight was aborted after waiting for one and half in the plane.
