National Assembly extends duration of seven ordinances

ISLAMABAD: Amidst an uproar created by the opposition, the National Assembly (NA) on Friday adopted the resolution tabled by Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar, calling for an extension in the duration of seven ordinances by 120 days. 

Members of the opposition, mostly belonging to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), erstwhile PTI, kept making noise during voting on the resolution.

Hitting out at the opposition, the minister, in a reference to ex-PTI chairman’s Imran Khan’s letter to the IMF, said that those who wrote letters to the money-lending organization were not the country’s well-wishers and wanted its annihilation. “Will they please tell me which party they belong to?” he questioned, adding that the status of these opposition members was not yet clear. 

Law Minister presents Legal Aid and Justice Authority Act, 2020 Amendment Bill, 2024

Also on Friday, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar on presented the Legal Aid and Justice Authority Act, 2020 Amendment Bill, 2024.

The minister also presented the Civil Courts Ordinance, 1962 Amendment Bill, 2024.

Barrister Gohar objects to mode of law-making

Later talking to journalists after the NA session was over, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that admitted the parliament had the power to make laws; but today the law-making began by violating the law.

He was of the view that the manner in which the Lower House passed laws today was unconstitutional. 

During the session, NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to five newly-elected female members of the National Assembly (MNAs), bringing the total number of MNAs taking oath to 316. 

The NA session was then adjourned for an indefinite time period.
