‘No decision yet on Taliban recognition’

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Biden administration is yet to take a decision on the recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), says the US special representative. Speaking to a private Afghan TV channel, Thomas West said his country wanted to see a representative government established in Afghanistan.
The commitments Afghanistan had held out to the global fraternity must be upheld, the diplomat stressed in an interview with TOLOnews. The US special representative said: “We want to see the establishment of a responsible record of conduct, when it comes to treatment of Afghans…” West also called for an immediate end to the practice of detaining women, particularly female protestors. The issue is currently under discussion.
The US was worried about a possible increase in Daesh and Al-Qaida activity in Afghanistan, said the diplomat, who branded the Islamic State as the common enemy of Kabul and Washington. “We definitely have concerns about the nature of the Taliban’s campaign against ISIS, but we want to see that succeed,” Wes added. Meanwhile, the Taliban renewed their commitment that they would not let any group threaten any country from Afghanistan’s territory. Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi told a gathering in Kabul the Taliban would not allow the use of Afghan soil against any country.
