People concerned about political tensions: Ibrahimi

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: Wolesi Jirga Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi on Wednesday said the security situation in the country was complicated and current circumstances required more focus on understanding between various political parties.

Ibrahim said the continuation of war and insecurity was one of the major challenges facing the country’s development -a challenge that got more complicated with each passing year.

Addressing the first session of the lower house after the winter recess, the speaker hoped the problem would be resolved and the ground paved for the country’s return to normality, with growth and development.

In an indirect reference to tensions between the Presidential Palace and former Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor, he said: “People are worried about political polarisation, besides the presence of terrorist groups in the country.”

According to the speaker, the current security situation in the country requires greater focus on harmony between different political movements. He emphasized unity among various ethnic groups.

“The emphasis on peace with armed groups at the second Kabul Process meeting, I believe, was the best option to bring peace and stability to the country. I hope this will put an end to the suffering of the Afghans,” he remarked.

He added the people demanded the conduct of transparent Wolesi Jirga and district council elections on schedule. He assured President Ghani: “This house will support your legitimate actions in the interest of the people and the country.” The president also delivered a speech to lawmakers and stressed the need for fair elections, stepping up the peace process and strengthening security and political stability.
