Sindh teachers end protest, announce taking matric exams from April 1

F.P. Report

KARACHI: The government school teachers in Sindh ended their protest and announced taking matriculation examinations from April 1, after their demands were met by the provincial educational minister on Friday.

The teachers had been staging a protest sit-in outside the Karachi Press Club. Speaking to them, Provincial Education Minister Sardar Shah recounted that he had been backing them from day one.

He said the provincial government had accepted justified demands of protesting academics and the chief minister had approved the summary of timescale.

Shah said the government had decided to permanently appoint academics, who had passed the NTS exam.

“A committee has been formed for group insurance, departmental promotion, utility allowance and other benefits,” he told the protesting teachers.

The minister said he felt ashamed for the teachers’ manhandling at the hands of police a day earlier, adding that the chief minister also expressed his displeasure over it.

He then said he too had some demands now, requesting the academics to assume duties for matriculation examinations. Shah urged them to play their role in preventing cheating during exams.

Later, the teachers announced ending their protest and dispersed from outside the press club.
