US, UNAMA welcome voter registration process

KABUL: The United States of America and United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Tuesday welcomed the start of voter registration process in Afghanistan.

Afghan Chief Executive Dr Abdullah Abdullah met US ambassador to Afghanistan John R. Bass and United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) special envoy for Afghanistan.

The US ambassador welcomed the start of voter registration process in Afghanistan and termed it a key step towards stability of democracy in the country.

He said his country would provide technical and financial assistance to Afghanistan to ensure reliable elections.

On the occasion, Dr Abdullah said the Afghan government was determined to hold comprehensive polls and stop the things which happened in the previous elections.

Dr Abdullah demanded of the international community to help address the issue of ongoing drought in Afghanistan. The US ambassador said they were ready to assist Afghanistan in its needs.

Separately, Dr Abdullah met UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto. In the meeting, Yamamoto welcomed the launching of voter registration process in Afghanistan. He assured UN assistance for elections.

He briefed President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani about the Geneva conference.

Dr Abdullah said the Afghan government was determined for transparent elections.
