Five killed in flash floods in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: At least five persons were killed in floods and hours of torrential rain in Penang state of Malaysia on Sunday; military forces were deployed to rescue thousands of displaced people.

Chief Minister of Penang State, Lim Guang Eng told local media that around 3,000 people had been evacuated and living in temporary shelters as the heavy rain and flood hits 80 percent of Penang

CM Lim claimed that the floodwaters had risen to 10-12 feet) and he warned in a social media post that more rain was expected and advised residents to stay at home.

Malaysian State News agency said that hundreds of trees were toppled and roads were submerged in Penang’s historic capital of George Town, leaving many areas largely paralyzed.

Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian nation’s meteorological service forecast stormy weather continuing in Penang as well as the neighbouring northern states of Kedah and Perlis.
