Mir Dad Khan elected Wolesi Jirga secretary

KABUL: Mir Dad Khan Nijrabi was on Wednesday elected as secretary of the Wolesi Jirga or lower house, collecting 110 votes in a fifth round of the voting.

Leaders of the two houses of parliament are elected for one legislative term. The current Wolesi Jirga speaker is Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi and Meshrano Jirga (Senate) chairman is Fazal Hadi Muslimyar.

President Ashraf Ghani recently inaugurated the 1st session of the 8th term of the 16th legislative year after a 45-day winter break.

The lower house then started electing members of the administrative board. The MPs elected Hamayon Hamayon as the first deputy speaker, Amir Khan Yar as second deputy speaker and Irfanullah Irfan as deputy secretary.

Hamayon, who chaired Wednesday’s session, announced Mir Dad Nijrabi as secretary-elect of the house after obtaining 110 votes.

He added Abdul Qadar Zazai with 76 votes was not able to reach the required threshold.

Zazai with 99 positives votes won in the first round of the election and Mir Dad Khan Najirabi with 104 positives votes in the second round as secretary.

Fresh elected secretary Najrabi promised he would work honestly.
