KABUL: Afghanistan’s ambassador to the United States says investment in the agriculture sector will boost the economy and generate jobs for the people.
Hamdullah Mohib expressed the view after the World Bank released its report on agriculture development in Afghanistan. Mohib said investment in the agriculture sector was investment in capacity building — something that could strengthen the economy, generate jobs and eradicate poverty.
The World Bank report on jobs in Afghanistan’s agriculture highlighted the sector as an important ingredient of development and security.
Agricultural items, women’s role, supplies to markets in far-flung areas and provision of small loans to growers have been mentioned in the report.
While underlining support for the vital sector, Mohib welcomed the report and said 70 percent people of Afghans in remote areas of the country had been associated with agriculture.
He added the government to strive for persuading farmer into cultivating saffron, cotton and other high-income crops.
