SC disposes of NAB’s plea against Maryam Nawaz’s bail

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday disposed of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) petition against the bail granted to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case when the bureau told the court that it was withdrawing it.

A three-member bench of the SC, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial, heard the case.

NAB prosecutor, on the occasion, submitted to the court the reply in writing.

Later, reading out the verdict in front of the judges, the prosecutor said that the case against Maryam was no longer fit for the hearing after the NAB amendments.

The Sharif family had been accused of using Chaudhry Sugar Mills for money laundering and illegal transfer of its shares.

According to the NAB, the family took a $15 million loan on the pretext of setting up the mill despite the fact that it had already been set up before the loan was borrowed.

The NAB maintains that more than Rs7 million worth of shares were transferred to the PML-N vice president’s bank account in 2008 through mill’s shares, which were later transferred to her cousin Yousaf Abbas Sharif’s account in 2010.

She was granted bail in the case on March 24, 2021 following which the anti-corruption watchdog filed a plea, seeking its cancellation.
