US military partnering with Afghan forces

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The US military is partnering with the Afghan national defense and security forces to bolster the security of Kabul.

The commander of the US Forces in Afghanistan and the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission Gen. John Nicholson has said efforts are underway to harden the security of Kabul in a bid to protect the people and international community in the capital city.

“The goal was to establish an inner-ring of security along with an outer-ring of security, and clear everything in between,” Gen. Nicholson was quoted as saying in a report by Reuters. He also added that a group of newly arriving US Army advisers would partner with some of the Afghan troops securing Kabul. Commandos would carry out intelligence-driven raids throughout the city.

According to Gen. Nicholson the operation was already ongoing with an aim to eliminate Taliban strongholds as well as Taliban facilitators, which included criminal enterprises that, for a price, gave the insurgents shelter or weapons.

“The Taliban are in the city,” Nicholson said. “So this is a process of deliberately clearing sections of the city. That’s begun.” This comes as the insurgent and terrorist groups have been attempting to carry out large scale attacks in the key cities of the country including capital Kabul during the recent months.

Both the Taliban and ISIS loyalists carried out a series of deadly attacks during the recent months that left scores of people dead and hundreds of others wounded.
