Pakistan power lifters shine in Singapore

KARACHI: Saniha Ghafoor and Twinkle Sohail each grabbed four gold medals while Pkistan’s male players also performed well in Oceania-Pacific Men and Women Powerlifting Championships underway at Park Avenue Convention Centre in Singapore.

According to information made available here, Saniha Ghafoor opened the door for Pakistan to clinch gold medals with a win in squat event of 57 Kg category.

She also showed brilliant performance in Bench-Press and Dead Lift events. Following r her brilliant performance, she has been invited by Australian Powerlifting Federation for three-month training program, sponsored by Australian Sports Commission, in Melbourne.

Asian gold medalist in 2015, Twinkle Sohail (72 Kg) bagged gold medals in all four of the weight category. Another female Pakistan powerlifter Sybil Sohail has yet to compete in 47 Kg Seniors event. She would compete on December 10.

Meanwhile, men’s team also kept Pakistani flag high in 105 Kg category. Syed Nadeem Hashmi won gold medal in Masters-1 event. Muhammad Ahmed Khan took gold medal in 120 Kg Sub-Junior category. Mahmood Heera also won gold medal in 120 Kg Masters-1 category. Pakistan team is scheduled to return home on December 12.
