KABUL (Pajhwok): The Center for Strategic Studies of the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a scientific discussion on Russia’s recognition of the Islamic Emirate, hoping the move would encourage other countries to follow suit.
Last week, Russia recognized the Islamic Emirate, becoming the first country to do so, saying that the official recognition of the Afghan government would further enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in diverse fields.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Center for Strategic Studies held a detailed discussion at an academic meeting on the background, factors and future opportunities of Moscow’s decision and its importance in Afghanistan’s foreign policy.
Dr. Abdul Hai Qanet, Director of the Third Political Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the meeting that although the Islamic Emirate enjoyed positive relations and interactions with many countries in light of its balanced foreign policy, Russia’s move would create many opportunities not only in bilateral relations with the country, but also in relations and interactions with other countries.
He said Russia had various concerns after the Islamic Emirate’s takeover, but those concerns were gradually addressed in the past four years.
According to him, security, positive policies, the decisive fight against drugs, the political will of the Islamic Emirate for constructive interaction, and some other issues led Russia to recognize the government in Kabul.
Qanet added existing obstacles to economic and political cooperation were completely done away with following Russia’s recognition of the Islamic Emirate, paving the way for many opportunities.
He said the move will also encourage other countries to recognize the Islamic Emirate because currently ‘very positive relations’ have been established with many countries in the region beyond media statements and with focus on important working issues.
The ministry noted the head of the Center for Strategic Studies and many other colleagues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also shared their views on the issue, and called Russia’s move an important development for the foreign policy of the Islamic Emirate.
