KARACHI: A session court in Karachi on Tuesday issued arrest warrants for Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir, Rao Anwar Ahmed, for not showing up in cases against former leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Saleem Shehzad as witness.

The former MQM leader appeared in court in two different cases being lodged against him in 1992. The Additional District and Session Judge East had summoned Rao Anwar, who is witness in these cases, thrice but he didn’t show up as a result of which the judge issued arrest warrants for SSP Rao.

Rao was suspended for arresting Khowaja Izharul Hasan previously. He is also notorious for staged encounters and facilitating land grabbing with patronage of important political personality as well as officers of the Law enforcement Agency.

The court heard two cases of arson and interfering in matter of state being lodged in Landhi and Khokhrapar police stations in 1992.

Meanwhile, speaking to media after the hearing at City Courts, MQM’s former leader Saleem Shehzad said that both MQM-P and PSP will become one on Friday, December 1, this year.

While predicting the union of MQM-P and PSP Shehzad said; “I see a political alliance in the making in coming few days. It’s much likely that both parties may form alliance on 12th Rabiul Awal.”

When asked as how does he predict the alliance despite the recent drama, Shehzad said that he has recently met with leaders of both the PSP and MQM-P and has advised them to come on single platform for protesting the Mohajir vote bank from being divided.

“The vote bank of Mohajirs in Sindh, especially Karachi should not be divided,” Shehzad said, demanding of the provincial government to give more powers to the mayor and local bodies’ representatives for fixing the problems of the city. “The roads are in bad condition whereas we see huge piles of garbage on street,” he further said, claiming it was due to lack of powers for local governments.
