Court sends Asad Qaiser to prison

ISLAMABAD: A judicial magistrate in the federal capital on Saturday ordered to house senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser, who was arrested a day earlier, in prison after which the Islamabad Police shifted him to Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail.

Earlier, an Anti-Corruption Establishment Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s team had taken the former speaker of National Assembly intso custody over embezzlement charges. The magistrate, Qudratullah, also directed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s top anti-graft department to complete the legal requirements within a week.

On Friday, Qaiser was shifted to Bani Gala Police Station for further interrogation in connection with his alleged involvement in corruption scandal of Gajju Khan Medical College, Swabi. The latest arrest comes as another setback for the party, which is already embroiled in legal battles with party’s top leadership behind bars in different cases.

Last week, Qaiser and Ali Muhammad Khan held a meeting with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to condole with him on the sad demise of his mother-in-law while also discussing the prevailing political situation in the country.

Meanwhile, four workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf have been released from Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi on Saturday. According to jail sources, four PTI workers were released on the orders of anti-terrorism court.

Sources said that the workers were arrested in cases registered against them in connection with violent incidents that broke out on May 9 following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan inside the Islamabad High Court.

The Lahore High Court has fixed November 7 as the date for hearing the bail application of PTI leader Alia Hamza in connection with a case related to May 9 vandalism. A two-judge bench of the LHC will take up the bail application. (INP)
