KABUL (TOLONews): Members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have emphasized the need to strengthen Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan during a recent meeting.
Participants also reviewed and finalized a list of weapons, military equipment, and technical tools intended for border protection, which are to be produced by CSTO member states and delivered to Tajik border forces.
According to a CSTO press release: “A meeting of representatives of the customer-coordinator and national state customers of the Targeted Interstate Program of the Collective Security Treaty Organization to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border was held at the CSTO Secretariat. Acting CSTO Secretary General Valery Semerikov took part in the event.”
Najiburrahman Shamal, a political analyst, stated: “We hope the mentioned countries will cooperate with Afghanistan to ensure long-term security, peace, and stability both in the country and across the region. Because any emergence of security issues would not only disrupt Afghanistan’s security but also endanger regional stability, especially among CSTO member states.”
Previously as well, CSTO members have repeatedly emphasized the need to bolster the Tajik-Afghan border in various meetings.
Some political analysts hold different views on the issue.
Military expert Mohammad Zalmai Afghanyar said: “Hasn’t the export of terrorism from these countries already affected Afghanistan? They should resolve political tensions through dialogue. They must accept a politically and economically stable Afghanistan as a partner so that Afghanistan can also cooperate with them.”
Salim Paygir, another political analyst, said: “If they perceive threats from Afghanistan, then let them invest within Afghanistan itself, so that we can jointly combat the dark phenomena they fear.”
Previously, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior, assuring the security of its borders, had called on neighboring countries to prevent drug smuggling from their territories into Afghanistan.
