QUITO: Diplomatic tensions between Ecuador and Russia have escalated, casting a shadow over Ecuador’s banana exports. The rift deepened when Russia announced a ban on banana imports from five Ecuadorian companies, citing concerns over disease in previous shipments.

The conflict stems from Ecuador’s decision to transfer old Russian military equipment to the United States in exchange for new military gear worth $200 million. President Daniel Noboa defended the move, emphasizing the need for upgraded equipment to combat drug gangs plaguing the nation.

Russia objected to the transfer, citing contractual agreements requiring Ecuador’s consent for third-party sales. The ban on banana imports is widely seen as retaliation for Ecuador’s decision to redirect military equipment.

The ban poses a significant challenge for Ecuador, a leading banana exporter, with Russia accounting for a substantial portion of its annual sales. As Ecuador seeks to mitigate the impact on its vital export industry, diplomatic efforts remain crucial to resolving the dispute and restoring trade relations.
