EU sends 130 tons of aid to quake-hit eastern Afghanistan

KABUL (Amu tv): The European Union said Thursday it has delivered 130 tons of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, marking the first of two planned shipments aimed at helping children and families affected by the recent earthquake in the country’s east.

The aid arrived in Kabul on Thursday via a chartered humanitarian flight. A second shipment is expected to arrive Friday, the EU said in a statement.

Funded entirely by the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, the assistance includes emergency shelter materials, tents, clothing, medical supplies, and clean water. The aid was delivered through two humanitarian charter flights.

“This earthquake has caused immense suffering to the people of Afghanistan, and needs in the affected areas are severe and growing,” the EU said. “The EU has moved quickly to deliver life-saving assistance and has also allocated €1 million in emergency funding to partner organizations responding on the ground.”

Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, said children and families in quake-affected areas are in urgent need of life-saving support.

“With the generous support of the EU, essential supplies will be delivered to ensure that affected communities receive the emergency assistance they need,” he said.

UNICEF said the aid will help scale up emergency response efforts, providing temporary shelter, clean water, medical care and winter protection for families in Kunar, Nangarhar, and neighboring provinces.

UNICEF teams have been present in the earthquake-hit regions since the disaster struck and are working closely with local partners and UN agencies to meet the immediate needs of children and families.
