House panel subpoenas Treasury, IRS for Trump’s tax returns

WASHINGTON: A House committee on Friday subpoenaed Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and the head of the Internal Revenue Service over their refusal to hand over President Trump’s tax returns.

House Ways and Means Committee chairman Rep. Richard Neal (D-Massachusetts) subpoenaed Mnuchin and IRS commissioner Charles Rettig after the treasury secretary rejected a request from the committee for the tax filings.

“After reviewing the options available to me, and upon the advice of counsel, I issued a subpoena today to the secretary of the Treasury and the commissioner of the I.R.S. for six years of personal and business returns,” Neal said in a statement.

“While I do not take this step lightly, I believe this action gives us the best opportunity to succeed and obtain the requested material.”

Trump has vowed to fight any requests to release the documents. Democrats believe the returns could shed light on the president’s alleged income from overseas.

Neal gave the agencies until May 17 to produce the records and pledged to take the request to court.
