TOKYO, (February 12, 2025) – Japan’s Industry Minister Yoji Muto announced on Wednesday that Japan has formally requested an exemption from the steep steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump raised tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to a uniform 25% on Monday, declaring that the move would support struggling American industries. However, the decision has sparked concerns over potential trade conflicts with key allies.
While Trump stated there would be “no exceptions or exemptions,” he later suggested that Australia’s request for an exemption would receive “great consideration,” citing the country’s trade deficit with the U.S.
Japan, a major exporter of steel and aluminium to the U.S., now seeks similar leniency, hoping to mitigate the economic impact of the tariffs on its industries.
