NDMA issues flood alert for Azad Jammu and Kashmir

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday issued a flood alert in view of possible heavy rains in different parts of Kashmir during the next 12 to 24 hours.

According to the alert, heavy rains are expected in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, especially Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Shraddha Haveli and Kotli during the next 12 to 24 hours. Due to heavy rains, there is a risk of flooding in urban and low-lying areas and land sliding in mountainous areas.

The alert says that people living near low-lying areas and rivers should remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel as sudden increase in flow in rivers is expected. Public and relevant institutions should take precautionary measures and stay away from low-lying and vulnerable areas.

NDMA says it is providing timely awareness to all relevant institutions regarding possible hazards and issuing instructions to all relevant agencies to take precautionary measures and prepare for potential hazards.

NDMA has asked people to avoid crossing rivers, bridges and flooded roads in case of high flows. Local administration and relevant agencies should keep necessary machinery and pumps ready for immediate drainage of water from low-lying areas, the NDMA said.
