New NATO SCR commends Afghan govt’s peace efforts, policies

KABUL (Pajhwok): NATO’s new Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) Sir Nicholas Kay has assured the alliance support for the proposed consultative Peace Jirga and the Kabul Process, a statement from the Presidential Palace said on Thursday.

The NATO SCR made the assurance during a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani at the Presidential Palace, the statement said.

Afghan peace process, fight against terrorism, convening the Consultative Peace Jirga and the Kabul Process Conference were among topics discussed during the meeting.

Ghani congratulated Kay on taking charge as NATO SCR in Afghanistan and said a regional consensus was needed for peace in Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism.

The president stressed that links between terrorist orgnaisations should be broken, especially the connection between some states and terrorist groups.

He added peace was a dire demand of the people of Afghanistan, adding that the third meeting of the Kabul Process would be held.

According to the Presidential Palace, Kay reiterated NATO support for Afghan government programs including the peace process and assured of full support for the Consultative Loya Jirga and the Kabul Process Conference.

It is worth mentioning that Kay has earlier served as the United Kingdom ambassador to Afghanistan.
