WHANGAREI: New Zealand won the first one-day international in Whangarei on Wednesday against the West Indies.
The West Indies managed to set a target of 249 for the home side after they loss a toss and were put to bat first. The tourists were struggling from the start as the hard hitting batsman Chris Gayle was failed to score as he was out cheaply on 22. Evin Lewis was the top scorer for the visitors as he scored 76 and stood against the Kiwis bowling attack.
Doug Bracewell was named man of the match after taking four for 55 with the ball, while spinner Todd Astle took three for 33 on debut.
In reply New Zealand always looked comfortable to achieve the target after getting excellent start from the opener and in the end they managed to win the match with four overs remaining.
The next fixture in the three-match ODI series is in Christchurch on Saturday.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and pacer Tim Southee will be rested for the second and third ODIs.
