Pakistan is important partner in region: Tillerson

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson acknowledged the importance of Pakistan and its role in the region, in an effort to make up with Pakistan.

Tillerson said this after a meeting Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif at the State Department. He said that the relationship of Pakistan and US are extremely important and may of the issues that Pakistan is struggling with are our issues.

Foreign ministers discussed the bilateral issues as well as to develop mechanism to end the terrorism in the region and the difference which were surfaces after President Trump speech while announcing Afghan policy.

Tillersons added that we appreciated the role of Pakistan in the war against terrorism and we discussed the south Asia policy in a regional context it is not just about Afghanistan, this is about the importance of Pakistan and Pakistan’s long term stability as well.

It was the first high level meeting after the President Trump allegations against Pakistan and announcing the new South Asia policy.

He added that Pakistan and US have a common desire for peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region at large and adding that Pakistan and US sharing 70 years of long relationship.

Tillerson further that the meeting is an opportunity to wash out the misunderstanding and revive the relationship which were unstable after the announcement of US policy towards Afghanistan.
