LISBON: The Foreign Office has issued a warning to people travelling to Lisbon this July and August.

Pope Francis is due to visit the Portuguese capital to attend the World Youth Day global gathering of young Catholics. The Catholic rally that St. John Paul II created aims to improve the relationship between young people and their faith.

The event takes place from August 2 to August 6, however, disruption may occur from the end of July. In a travel advice update, the Foreign Office said: “Portugal will host a visit from the Pope as part of World Youth Day from August 1 to August 6.

“During this period, you should expect an increase in the number of people using public transport and other facilities in the Lisbon area. Be prepared for road closures and restrictions on accessing the city by car on days when major events are taking place.

“There will be enhanced security checks at land borders from July 22 to August 7.

“If you are travelling to Portugal by road during this period, you should familiarise yourself with the authorised border crossing points and allow more time to enter or exit Portugal.”
