Qatar: Afghanistan needs world’s help in addressing challenges

KABUL (Pajhwok): Qatar’s representative to the UN says that the international community must help reduce Afghanistan’s challenges by supporting the reconstruction of its institutions, ensuring access to humanitarian aid, unfreezing its assets, and engaging in dialogue with all parties.

In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al-Suwaidi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, made these remarks on Monday during a session reviewing the situation in Afghanistan, held on the sidelines of the 60th meeting of the Human Rights Council.

Al-Suwaidi stated that Afghanistan is facing numerous challenges, including economic hardships and unemployment, increased humanitarian needs, recurring climate-related events, rising poverty and food insecurity, continued sanctions, frozen bank assets, and the return of millions of Afghan migrants to the country.

She said addressing these challenges required continued international support for rebuilding Afghanistan’s institutions, guaranteeing access to humanitarian assistance, and maintaining dialogue with all Afghan parties.

According to the statement, she said these measures will help create the necessary conditions for Afghanistan’s reintegration into the international community and enable it to fulfill its international obligations.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar emphasized that her country includes human rights issues in its discussions with Afghan parties—especially support for and strengthening of women’s participation, ensuring their right to education and employment, and protecting the rights of all segments of Afghan society.

She added that the State of Qatar once again renewed its commitment as an active international partner, stressing that through its mediation efforts and by hosting meetings of special representatives on Afghanistan and expert working groups under the United Nations framework, it has successfully contributed to building international consensus on many important issues.
