SC restores tax on telecom services

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday restored taxation on telecom services, withdrawing an earlier order by former chief justice Saqib Nisar that suspended the taxes.

The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, while giving the short order, announced the restoration of all taxes on mobile companies.

“The reason will be recorded later. All the interim orders for suspension of taxes are withdrawn and all taxes will be intact,” stated the order announced by CJP Khosa.

During the hearing, Justice Qazi Faez Isa also questioned whether suo motu jurisdiction could be invoked in tax matters.

In June last year, the former CJP had suspended taxes on mobile services. The state reportedly faced a loss of more than Rs90 billion due to the order.

After a detailed hearing, the bench disposed of the case by withdrawing its earlier orders.
