Accountability court rejects Nawaz’s objection on Avenfield supplementary reference

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court hearing corruption references against Nawaz Sharif and his family on Tuesday rejected the objections raised by Nawaz’s counsel on a supplementary reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Avenfield flats case.

Accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir, started hearing the cases after former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam, and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar reached the court.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed three references against Nawaz and his family on the directives of Supreme Court following its July 28 judgment in the Panama Papers case.

The three references include the London flats,  Al-Azizia Steel Mills and offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd.

During the hearing, Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Harris raises objections on the supplementary reference in the London flats case and asked the court to reject it.

NAB’s prosecutor during argument said that the supplementary reference has been filed after getting new evidence in the case.

The court then reserved its verdict on Nawaz’s plea and began hearing the Al Azizia reference.

Today, the court has also summoned more witnesses, including Afaq and Waqar Ahmad, to record statements, while it had recorded statements of two prosecution witnesses at the last hearing.

The hearing has been adjourned until February 2.

Strict security measures have been taken around the federal judicial complex.

Earlier this month, the NAB submitted a supplementary reference against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and four others in the Avenfield properties case and claimed that it included new evidence against Sharif family. Around seven more witnesses, including two from the United Kingdom, have been added in the reference.
