KABUL (Agencies): The government of Afghanistan has welcomed the invitation for its membership in Global Press Freedom Coalition.
This stance of the government of Afghanistan was declared in a meeting held yesterday between Second Vice President Sarwar Danesh and British ambassador to Kabul.
The Global Press Freedom Coalition has been initiated by the governments of Britain and Canada and so far a number of world countries have joined the coalition. In the meeting, British ambassador to Kabul invited Afghanistan for the membership in the respective coalition, praising the government of Afghanistan for its role and support of freedom of expression and media. The British ambassador said that it was determined that an official letter would be soon delivered on behalf of British minister of foreign affairs to Afghanistan for membership in the respective coalition.
In the meeting, second vice president Sarwar Danesh welcomed the invitation, adding that the government of Afghanistan was ready to join the Global Press Freedom Coalition with various reasons. Pointing to part of efforts that have been made by the government of Afghanistan towards supporting press freedom and freedom of expression in recent years, Second Vice President said that he was leading a joint committee of the government and media created for prevention of violence against journalists and maintaining safety of media in the country. He added that based on demand of Afghanistan Journalists Federation, procedure of the committee’s operation has been enhanced to a regulation.
