An unfortunate gimmick

Senator Raja Zafarul Haq investigation Committee Report on the amendment to the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat Oath Declaration has come to light. The contents of the report are tragic and soul searing. It vividly depicts how low the political leadership of Islamic Republic of Pakistan can stoop to save one powerful political personality, Nawaz Sharif by portraying him a liberal and secular democrat to the western countries by making amendment to this declaration in the garb of Election Bill 2017.

The report reveals that the Law Minister Zahid Hamid alone was not responsible for the decision of amendment to the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat Oath Declaration. It was the unanimous decision of 34 members Parliamentary Committee which included members of parliament from PML.N, Jamiate Ulema Islam (F), Jamat Islami, People’s Party, Tehrik-i-Insaf and all other political parties having representation in the parliament. This report has been submitted to the parliament and its copies have been sent to all members of parliament.

The amendment to Khatm-i- Nabuwwat Oath Declaration was a deliberate attempt to enlist the support of western countries for Nawz Sharif who is stuck in the quagmire of corruption. It is also meant to portray the political elite as liberal democrats. Any political move to hoodwink public opinion and indicate the disqualified Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif of being a true democrat will certainly backfire. Such like gimmicks can not divert the attention of the people from the real issue of corruption which is devouring the country like termites. The findings of Senator Raja Zafarul Haq Committee Report justify the protest of Tehrik-i-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah, Pakistan Sunni Tehrik and Tahfuz-i- Khatam-i- Nabuwwat to register their outrage, anguish and indignation over the selfish political stunt of federal government.

To add injury to insult, leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah floated proposal of contacting the military leadership to end the sit-in at Faizabad. He suggested that government has the constitutional prerogative to call army for ending this issue. This issue can amicably be resolved through dialogue. Hence, show or use of power may prove counterproductive. One should not forget the fall out of using force in PNA agitation in 1977. The PPP leadership should certainly remember it.  It is the political leadership, which unnecessarily ignited this most sensitive issue in the first place and now it is for them to settle it peacefully. No need to drag military in the mess that was created by the politicians in the first place. It is the collective guilt of all political parties and they should take the responsibility of suggesting the controversial amendment to the Kham-i-Nabuwwat Oath Declaration and then passing it camouflaged in the Election Bill 2017. It is incumbent upon those who voted in favor of this bill to show repentance and invoke forgiveness of Allah.

The Supreme Court has taken notice of the Faizabad sit-in that has paralyzed the Capital City for a fortnight. Justice Qazi Faez Issa has directed the Defense and Interior Secretaries to submit a detailed report. Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddique of Islamabad High Court has tasked the High Court Bar Cabinet to play their role in ending the sit in. The government has not yet made up its mind for serious dialogue on this volatile problem and deliberately ignoring the fact to keep this country in chaos while the time is running out. It is worthwhile that federal government should come out from the state of political and administrative hibernation and take measures for a peaceful end of Raizabad sit-in.Hopefully sanity will prevail on both sides as the country cannot afford disorder.
