Committee suggested long-term durable solution for jurisdictional issues between CDA & MCI

ISLAMABAD: Senate Special Committee on Fri-day in its meeting further deliberated upon the matter of jurisdictional issues between Capital Develop-ment Authority (CDA) and Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) to suggest a course of action to address the issues.

The Committee was of the considered view that most of the issues that have emerged are primarily due to hasty legislation which resulted not only in legal lacuna but also administrative overlap and ambiguity.

It was observed that with requisite political will and sincerely taking up and following upon the issues at hand resolution of the crisis can be achieved early. Matters of delay in framing rules, proper division of power and functions and lack of implementation were also discussed.

Senator Mushahid Hussain underlined that issues pertaining to Islamabad need to be tackled in a holistic manner, seeking a long-term durable solution, above any partisan considerations.

The Committee received a detailed briefing from the Special Assistant to the PM, MNA, Ali Awan, Cha-irman of the Local Gover-nment Commission, who informed the Committee that the Government was keen to present reforms, including legislation, to resolve issues faced by the people of Islamabad, including a proposal for direct elections for the Mayor of Islamabad.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed here at the Parliament House on Friday and was attended by member of the Committee Senator Dr. Shehzad Was-eem and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, MNA Ali Awan Chairman of the Local Government Commission as a special invitee. Joint Secretary from the ministry of Interior also attended the meeting.
