Don’t want Rabbani as Senate chairman: Zardari

F.P. Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari Wednesday said he doesn’t want party leader Raza Rabbani to become Senate chairman while responding to a question regarding the offer made by Nawaz Sharif to back Rabbani for the position.

Senate chairman will be from PPP, Asif Ali Zardari said in an earlier discussion. He was talking to media after the meeting with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The former President said, “Next chairman of Senate will be ours and the next government will be of Peoples Party.”

Nawaz Sharif said that ruling PML-N would back Senator Raza Rabbani as Senate Chairman if PPP continues with the lawmaker as its candidate.

Nawaz Sharif presided over a meeting of ruling party’s allies including Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Mir Hasil Bizenjo and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman, in Islamabad and discussed multiple names under consideration for candidates for Senate chairman and deputy chairman.

The participants discussed possibility of approaching independently elected senators from Balochistan province to have them support PML-N’s candidate.

Talking to media, Zardari stressed that his party had gained majority in the Senate by overwhelming performance. He called it a slap on the political rivals’ face who claim to have brought progress.

He lashed out at the political opposition who claim that the PPP face end, adding that the party’s victory in the Senate elections should be acknowledged.

Moreover, he criticised the former PM Nawaz Sharif. “Nawaz Sharif has become politically ineligible due to his action,” he opined.

Zardari called Nawaz “the founder of horse-trading” who laid the foundation of the act in Changa Manga.
