EU shows disappointment on inability to reach agreement on extension of truce in Yemen

F.P. Report

BRUSSELS: The European Union is deeply disappointed by the inability to reach an agreement on the extension of the truce in Yemen as proposed by UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg. Maximalist positions have not facilitated this task.

The truce has delivered very tangible benefits to millions of Yemenis, and UN Special Envoy H.Grundberg’s proposal offers the possibility of significantly enhancing its impact, including payment of salaries to civil servants, additional flights to/from Sana’a, unfettered oil shipments through Hudaydah port and road reopening notably around Taez. This would improve the life of millions of Yemenis, who continue to suffer under the consequences of the ongoing conflict.

We call on the Houthis to show genuine commitment to peace, moderate its demands and engage constructively with UN Special Envoy H.Grundberg. Refusing his proposal is a strategic mistake, it is not what the Yemenis want, and deserve.
