Female vaccinator killed, other hurt in Swabi attack

SWABI: A female vaccinator was killed and her colleague has been seriously injured in an attack in a region of Tehsil Razaar area during the continued vaccination campaign here on Wednesday, said district health officer, Dr Mohammad Tariq and police officials.

The incident was occurred in jurisdiction of Purmuli police station on Mirali-Shewa road. The two LHWs were part of the vaccination campaign which was started here on Wednesday. When they reached to the Khrorh Bridge on Mirali-Shewa road two unidentified motorcyclists suddenly appeared and opened fire on them. As result ShakeelaNaz was killed on the spot and Ghuncha Begum was seriously injured. She was taken to Tehsil headquarters hospital Razaar but soon referred to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar due to her serious condition. Doctors said that the injured vaccinator condition was serious.

Health officials said that the deceased LHW belonged to Boko village and the injured to Purmuli village. It has been learnt that security personnel were not accompanied them to provide security umbrellas to them because Purmuli has not been declared the most sensitive region and police personnel are providing security umbrella only in those region which are most sensitive.

Chief Minister Mehmood Khan took notice of killing of a lady polio worker in Swabi and sought report from Inspector General of Police.

Expressing his concern, the CM condemned the incident and directed police chief to bring the culprits of the incident to justice. He expressed condolence with the bereaved family and prayed eternal peace for the departed soul. He also directed provision of best medical treatment to other lady health work who sustained injuries in the incident.

The CM expressed resolve that polio vaccination drive would continue saying that such cowardly act could not shake the commitment of the government and polio health teams from making the country polio free. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Swabi has imposed ban on display and carrying of weapons, pillion riding under section 144 Cr. PC during the polio campaign started from 29th January till February 2.

This order would not apply to the arm forces, police personals on duty, officials of district administration, polio teams and security guard who are granted special permission and permit by Law Enforcing Agencies or their respective Heads. Those who violate the order will punishment under section 188 PPC.
